History

From the first millenium BC, the first inhabitants, the Dacians, descendents of the big Trachian family, were living in the land between the Carpathians and the Danube.
The Romans, led by emperor Traian, led 2 difficult campaigns across the Danube to conquer this land and finally succeeded in the 2nd century.
The Roman occupation, that lasted for 165 years - a relatively short time - has brought progress to the people, and a new language, Romanian was born.
This Latin language suffered some changes after migratory tribes passed through, but it is remarkable that it was preserved, although geographically we were an isolated island of Latinity.
It was these uncertain times, during the 13-15 centuries, that the medieval states of Valachia and Moldova were formed.
Also it was during the 15 century that famous Vlad the Impaler battled with the Turks, fighting for independence. It is an irony this national hero of Romanians will be known as the feared Dracula, and so many legends are born.
Meanwhile, Transylvania has a completely different path, under either Turkish or Austro-Hungarian influence.
Moldova and Valachia, were united in 1859, and thrived after the the first monarchy, led e by Carol the 1st Hohenzolern was established. Also the victory in the Balkan war of 1877 will pring progress to all the region.
Once Transylvania is united with the rest of he country in 1918, a new era started for Romania, but it was shadowed by the start of the two World Wars. The end of the war brought over communism in Romania which lasted 45 years, but after dictatorship was turned over in 1989, Romania now faces a new future.

People

Something visitors will always remember it is the warmth of the people, especially those living in the countryside. We welcome guests open hearted, and you will feel the warmth and kindness everywhere.
Mostly due to our Latin blood we enjoy music and dances - you will hardly be allowed to leave a wedding-party before morning, people are happy to have guests and proud to show their heritage and traditions.
It is only natural for people in the countryside to have a strong community, helping each other when in distress, building together houses, weeping and/or laughing together at family events like weddings, baptizing, funerals, enjoying religious celebrations or various local events.
The population of Romania counts approx. 22 million people, out of which 55% live in the countryside. The average density is 98 inhabitants/sq km.Bucharest, the capital and largest city of Romania, has some 2 million inhabitants.
